La Leche League

Breastfeeding. It can be an extremely rewarding experience. It can also be difficult at times. Research shows that professional & peer support are an important part of breastfeeding success. La Leche League is an organization that provides just that.

LLL was created by 7 mothers in 1956 (they are celebrating their 60th year this year!) who were breastfeeding in a time where breastfeeding wasn’t the “norm”. They came together to support each other through their journeys, so that their breastfeeding relationships could thrive. They grew the organization into something nothing short of amazing: trained professional, peer led meetings; local, national, and international events; 24 hour helpline for nursing mothers; and community education programs. LLL’s core values are based on the belief that breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way to nurture your baby.

What to expect when reaching out to LLL:

Whether you attend a meeting, send an email, or make a phone call – LLL will help you navigate the (sometimes) unpredictable and overwhelming nursing journey.

When I was first pregnant (oh, so many years ago), I was shy to attend a LLL meeting. I was unsure whether I would fit “the mold” of a breastfeeding mother; I didn’t have a home birth, I wasn’t eating organic, I wasn’t co-sleeping, etc. Guess what? NONE OF THAT MATTERS. LLL welcomes all breastfeeding mothers with open arms.

At a meeting there will be other nursing mothers and their babies (some at different point in their nursing relationships), pregnant mothers, and (at least) one peer leader. The peer leader is a mother who has nursed and been trained by LLL. The goals of these informal meetings are to provide support, encouragement, and resources to foster your confidence in your breastfeeding journey.

Finding support throughout your pregnancy & postpartum period is important, in order to set yourself up for the best chance of breastfeeding success- find peer support. Attend a LLL meeting (find one here on the East End) and meet all the wonderful leaders and other supportive, loving mothers navigating a similar path.
